Padel in Johor Bahru: A Beginner's Guide to Getting Started

By Padel Johor·

Padel is the fastest-growing racquet sport in the world, and it has quietly arrived in Johor Bahru. If you've seen the glass-walled courts around town and been curious — here's everything you need to know.

What Is Padel?

Padel is a doubles racquet sport played on an enclosed court about a third the size of a tennis court. The walls are part of the game (like squash), and you use a solid perforated paddle instead of a strung racquet. It's easier to pick up than tennis, far more social, and genuinely addictive once you've played a few times.

Games are fast, rallies are long, and you don't need to be athletic to enjoy it. Padel rewards positioning and teamwork more than raw power — which is why it works for all ages and fitness levels.

Where to Play in JB

Right now, JB has a small but growing number of clubs. PadelStop JB in Tampoi is the pioneer — four indoor courts, open 9am to midnight every day. Free racket and ball rental is included with your booking, making it perfect if you don't own equipment yet. Booking is done through the Playtomic app.

Eden by Wizards in Tebrau combines padel with badminton courts in a single facility. Good option if you're based in the Mount Austin or Tebrau area.

More clubs are on the way — the Johor State Government has announced plans to build public padel courts in Nusa Duta, and the sport is gaining serious momentum across Malaysia.

Your First Session

  • Bring four people. Padel is always doubles. You need a minimum of four to fill a court. Split the court fee and it works out very affordable.
  • No equipment needed. Most clubs rent rackets and balls. Just show up in sports shoes and comfortable clothes.
  • Book ahead on weekends. Weekday slots are usually available last minute, but weekends fill up fast.
  • Don't worry about the rules. The basic rules take about five minutes to explain. Any club staff can walk you through it before your first game.
  • Expect to get hooked. Most first-timers book their next session before leaving.
The JB padel scene is still early. Getting in now means you'll be ahead of the curve when more clubs open and the community grows.
